Congenital heart defects

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is a term used to describe a group of heart problems that are present at birth and affect the structure of the heart and/or the large vessels near the heart. There are many types of CHD. Some may be detected before birth and, in some cases, can be treated before birth. Other types are not found until after the baby is born, during childhood, or in adulthood.

Acquired heart conditions

  • Arrhythmias (irregular heart rhythms)
  • Cardiomyopathy (weakening of the heart muscle)
  • Myocarditis (inflammation of the heart)
