Acid Reflux

Tired of heartburn, disrupted sleep, and ongoing discomfort that won’t go away? Surgery may be the next step.

Uncontrolled chronic acid reflux, or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), happens when acid from your stomach flows up into your esophagus (the tube that carries food from your mouth to your stomach). It causes a constant burning feeling in your chest, acid coming back up into your throat when you lie down, trouble swallowing, and may also lead to more serious problems like esophageal cancer.

If your acid reflux keeps coming back despite lifestyle changes or medications, you don’t have to figure it out alone. Our specialists can meet with you to review your symptoms, your current treatments, and your overall health. Together, we can decide if advanced options, including surgery, are right for you.

Why Choose Surgery for GERD?

At Jackson Health System, we offer effective procedures that fix the cause of acid reflux, not just the symptoms. These simple options may help stop acid from coming back up and, for many patients, it means no more daily medications or discomfort.

Surgical Treatments We Offer for Reflux (GERD)

If a part of your stomach is pushing into your chest, surgeons can repair it. A hiatal hernia can be caused by reflux itself, but it’s usually fixed at the same time as other anti-reflux surgeries, see below.

A small ring of magnetic beads is placed around the lower esophagus. It keeps acid in your stomach by remaining closed when not eating or drinking (preventing reflux), but opens and lets food pass through when eating or drinking.

  • Quick recovery
  • Minimally invasive
  • Preserves your anatomy
  • Proven track record

Toupet fundoplication
A Toupet fundoplication is a partial wrap. The surgeon takes the top of the stomach and wraps it about 270 degrees (three-quarters of the way) around the lower esophagus. It reinforces the valve between the esophagus and stomach. This creates a strong barrier to stop acid reflux. Because it is not a full circle, it often allows easier swallowing afterward.

Nissen fundoplication
A Nissen fundoplication is a full wrap. The surgeon takes the top of the stomach and wraps it 360 degrees (all the way around) the lower esophagus. This creates a strong barrier to stop acid reflux.

If You Previously Had Gastric Sleeve, Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass or Bipartition Surgery Might Be an Option for You

Common weight-loss surgeries that also helps treat severe GERD, especially in patients with obesity:

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass

  • Creates a small stomach pouch and reroutes part of the small intestine
  • Helps limit reflux by creating a new pathway for food, separating stomach acid from the esophagus
  • Often recommended when other treatments have not worked and weight is a contributing factor
  • Supports long-term weight loss

Bipartition

  • A partial bypass that leaves the sleeve in place
  • Connects the small intestine to the bottom of the sleeve without cutting the stomach. This relieves pressure in the sleeve that can cause reflux.
  • Recommended when other treatments have not worked and weight is a factor
  • Can be reversed, returning the stomach to a sleeve configuration
