Colon and Rectal Surgery
See how we use advanced technology to treat problems of the digestive tract with minimally invasive procedures.
Cancers of the colon and rectum can be deadly, unless detected and treated in time. That is why our Jackson Medical Group colorectal specialists recommend screening starting at age 45 (or earlier if you are at higher risk).
Our screening services, including colonoscopies, can also detect other types of disease affecting the lower end of your digestive tract. If pre-cancerous polyps are detected, they can usually be removed during the colonoscopy procedure.
Our specialties include:
- Diagnostic colonoscopies: For detecting cancer and pre-cancerous polyps
- Staging laparoscopies: For determining the extent of cancer
- Transanal endoscopic microsurgery: For removing some rectal tumors
- Colectomies: For removal of a portion of the colon
- Abdominal perineal resection: To remove the rectum and anus and create a permanent colostomy
- Small bowel resection: For removal of part of the small intestine
- Stoma creation: To create another excretory pathway in the abdomen

Minimally Invasive Surgery
The Colorectal and Minimally Invasive Surgery Specialists use advanced technology to minimize pain, shorten recovery time, and reduce scarring. New equipment and new techniques allow our surgeons to perform complex procedures through tiny incisions (or sometimes with no incision at all). These minimally invasive procedures are associated with decreased complications and shorter hospital stays. Our innovative, leading-edge procedures are some of the most advanced in the nation utilizing the da Vinci®️ Surgical System. We not only treat patients, but also teach other physicians how to use the robot in surgical applications.
For diagnosis and treatment of cancers of the colon, rectum, and small bowel, the following procedures are performed:
- Staging laparoscopy: These procedures are performed to determine the extent of the cancer, or to “stage” the cancer. Information gathered from this examination helps physicians create the best treatment plan.
- Transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM): a minimally invasive technique in which certain early or superficial rectal tumors can be removed through the anus
- Segmental colectomy/left or right colectomy: removal of a portion of the colon
- Abdominal perineal resection: removal of the anus, rectum and sigmoid colon, and creation of a permanent colostomy
- Total abdominal colectomy: removal of the entire colon
- Total proctocolectomy: removal of the colon, rectum and anus
- Small bowel resection: removal of part of the small intestine
- Stoma creation for fecal diversion: surgery that creates an opening in the abdomen for stool to pass through
Patient consultations take place at the Colorectal and Minimally Invasive Surgery Specialist practice on Sunset Drive, or at Holtz Children’s Hospital for pediatric cases.
